Henry Yau
(Perth, Western Australia) Joined Toastmasters in 2009 Before I joined Toastmasters I was the Western Australia State Manager of a Debt Collection agency and my role was to train our staff to their roles. My boss saw the need for me to improve my presentation skills and suggested that I visit a Toastmasters Club. This instruction was given to all State Managers and to this day I am the only one still involved. I was very impressed at my first visit at a Toastmasters Club that I decided to join straight away. Friends and colleagues started to notice my confidence in my presentations and general behaviour. The need to communicate effectively with confidence was the catalyst for me to continue with the Toastmasters program. After 7 years into the program I earned my Distinguished Toastmasters Award, the highest award a Toastmaster can earn. Toastmasters has assisted me both personally and professionally. I am confident when meeting new people and no longer the quite one. At my current work, my colleagues are often surprised at the level of my quick responses to un prepared questions. This is due to the Toastmasters Table Topics impromptu sessions that have moulded me into someone that can respond to any question with conviction. I have served in many Leadership roles within Toastmasters, and this has given me the skills needed to lead a Team and work with others effectively. These soft skills that I have developed are transferrable into my current work environment. I am so grateful for these opportunities and I feel very fortunate that I joined Toastmasters. |
Juliana Kelly
(Perth, Western Australia) Joined Toastmasters in 2016 I heard about Toastmasters about 27 years ago just before I got married and wanted to give a speech as a bride. It didn’t eventuate and I bumbled along as a very nervous speaker until one day, a friend from swimming invited me to her TM club. The fear for public speaking is no longer there after a lot of practice as the Speechcraft Manager speaking in front of different audiences in varied settings. When I took up this role I had totally pushed myself outside my comfort zone. In fact I cannot believe I can finally speak in front with confidence and now able to contribute to helping others in the oracy space. I am a different version of myself thanks to Toastmasters! |

(Goodlands, Mauritius) Joined Toastmaster in 2021 I work as an associate paraplanner. During my career phase, I have realised how an effective communication is very significant in our professional and personal lives. I came as a guest in Toastmaster a few times, and I have enjoyed every session with the members who warmly welcomed me. Throughout my life, I have been a timid and reserved person. My goal is to be a bold and confident speaker in front of any type of audience. I found hope when I watched and occasionally participated in the Toastmaster session, and now I feel proud to be a member of this prestige platform. |
Dick Mills
(Vermont & Florida, USA) Joined ZoomMasters in 2022 Early in life I panicked and froze on stage at a technical conference. I had to walk away in disgrace. Subsequent teaching assignments taught me to become comfortable speaking to groups. I learned to love public speaking. I did business presentations. I spoke at scientific conferences. I taught at a junior college. I even enjoyed doing a TEDx Talk. You can see it here. I joined Toastmasters to keep in practice, but I soon learned that there was much I could do to improve. More important, Toastmasters gives me opportunities to help younger people to also become comfortable and effective speakers. At one point, I was a member of three Toastmasters clubs, the sponsor of three gavel clubs inside prisons, and a coach for TED speakers. Seniors appreciate contacts with ambitious young people. Mental challenges help them to stay sharp. |
